annesmithAnne Smith, who previously held public affairs roles with Safety and Ecology Corp., Perma-Fix Environmental and URS/CH2M Oak Ridge, has been named the communications chief at North Wind Group.

North Wind is a small business on the rise, recently taking over management of the Department of Energy’s Transuranic Waste Processing Center in Oak Ridge. The company is based in Idaho Falls. Smith will be located in the company’s Knoxville office.

According to the announcement,  Smith will be responsible for “representing the company within external community and public affairs networks as well as internal company-wide communications.”

Christopher Leichtweis, president of North Wind Group and Smith’s former boss at SEC, said Smith’s background will benefit the company’s expanding operations. “As the company continues to grow, so does the need for effective communications,” he said in a statement.

North Wind was founded in 1997 and, since 2010, has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Cook Inlet Region Inc., an Alaska Native Corporation.
